AWARDS

Associated Church Press

Parenting Publications of America News Feature

2006 Gold Award:
Pittsburgh Parent; "Dealing with Overweight Kids," Sue Washburn, writer; Pat Poshard, editor
Judges description: A first-person opening provides authenticity to this helpful and hopeful report on causes and solutions to child obesity. A mother willing to be this honest about such a pervasive problem earns respect.

2005 Bronze Award: Pittsburgh Parent; "Kids Exploring
the Environment," Sue Washburn, writer; Pat Poshard, editor
Judge's Description: Good reporters know there is no substitute for firsthand observation, as the writer proves with a "take-me-there" lead from Mrs. Lokay's fourth-grade classroom. I can almost hear the "rhythmic drone of the earthmovers" and smell the freshly-laid asphalt. Added kudos for the helpful section on ways parents can teach their children to learn about their own environment.
